This is perfectly valid HTML.  It's ugly as sin, but it's done this way
to make sure that important line breaks aren't lost.

It's very doubtful that the extra line breaks are causing htmldoc to
crash.  If htmldoc leaves a core file, you can try 'gdb -c core
/usr/bin/htmldoc', then typing 'bt' at the gdb prompt, but I suspect
that all of the debugging symbols are missing, so you won't get any
useful information.

If you want to clean up the HTML, try downloading html tidy, from
http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy/
