The 90% figure comes from my own experience, in terms of the number of
messages I've received about my HOWTO (hundreds over the last few
years), my experience in industry and in terms of what I'd personally
recommend a client use.

I agree with you in general terms, however I didn't just randomly pick
RedHat. *Oracle* did:
"However, because of the indeterminate number of possible distributions
and Oracle?s desire to see customers succeed it is necessary to confine
enterprise class support to those distributions that Oracle believes
can be successfully deployed in enterprise class environments. Oracle
has worked closely with Red Hat to ensure that Red Hat Linux Advanced
Server meets these criteria. We look forward to the day when other
Linux distributions are able to meet the same demanding standards."
(That's a quote from
http://otn.oracle.com/tech/linux/htdocs/linux_techsupp_faq.html)
I think that anyone spending £10K+ on software licences is likely to
want the option of having support. Given that, no-one who is serious
about using Oracle on Linux is likely to use anything else.
