The submission generated a discussion thread with title "Re: Versioning Issues (Oracle 8i HOWTO)", starting at message number 3243 on ####@####.#### Some days ago I decided to (try) to answer the last message in the thread, by David Merril. I ended up with writing only to David (I enclose that message here below for those who might be interested to read the reasons why I decided to write the HOWTO above.) David suggested me to sumbit again the HOWTO above in order to be published. So here it is All the best Luca Roversi ------------------My message to Davi Merril-------------------------- Dear all, as far as I could understand, this discussion thread started after I asked to include a HOWTO to install Oracle 8.1.7 on RH7.2 (like) systems, that you can find at: http://www.di.unito.it/~rover/LOCAL-HOWTOS/Oracle8-on-RH7X.html I wrote the howto above because: 1) it took me about 10 days to find all the necessary information to have Ora8.1.7 running on a RH7.2 linux box. 2) I wanted to help and encourage students (of a course on the basics of databases) interested to use one of the latest and good linux distributions together with Ora8.1.7 for their duties 3) I realized that many other people was interested to overcome odd problems to have Ora8.1.7 running on such a linux box. (Once I "announced" on an italian mailing list that I could install the above Oracle release, somebody even called me by phone to ask questions about how to solve the problems they encountered) So, I submitted the above howto to LDP essentially because I have been pressed by interested people. I really did consider to modify directly Darlington's howto and "extend" it to RH7.2. I decided to write another because I thought exactly what Stephen clearly states in its first message of this thread: any extension of his howto would transform it in a kind of "if-then-else" flow-chart, making it essentially unreadable. I understand that a new howto about Oracle on RH would alter the TOC of the howtos directory; at the moment, indeed, there are two howtos dealing with this subject. One is relative to Oracle 7, the other, by Stephen, is about Oracle 8. This is a reasonable organization, but following the "real world", it look quite arbitrary, since the installation problems are evidently related also to the Linux distribution one wants to use, and not only to the Oracle's distribution, as the TOC suggests. I agree that it would be nice to have a kind of automatic configuration generator, that, given the pair <oracle release, linux release>, yields the right steps to get through the installation; however, even starting today, it would take quite a lot before to get it running. In the meantime, many will be discouraged from using some good linux distributions together with some stable oracle release, not contributing to have linux used for real applications. For all the reasons above, I conclude by asking again to include the howto: http://www.di.unito.it/~rover/LOCAL-HOWTOS/Oracle8-on-RH7X.html as part of LDP.
