tell me if this is too far off topic.

when using the tidy program, it tends to insert lots of 
white space around the sgml tags.  that's normally a 
good thing.  except when there is punctuation immediately 
after a tag.  i don't want any white space before a period, 
comma or semi-colon that immediately follows a tag.  

is there a way to prevent tidy from doing this?  is there a 
way to fix the problem after tidy has done its work?
