Greetings, Serge Victor and any/all other TLDP volunteers.

TLDP shows v1.8.4 of the Linux User Group HOwTO, submitted by me on
2013-07-25, nine years ago.

TLDP declined to merge my next three submissions, several through Feb.
2019. Finally when I inquired about _why_, Serge stated that he had
established new[-ish] policy that all submissions must now be routed via
GitHub.

I have no problem with Serge's preference in workflow, except that (as I
said three years ago), I myself politely decline to agree to GitHub,
Inc. / Microsoft's terms of service merely to submit copyleft-licensed
documentation to TLDP. Therefore, I suggested that Serge or any other
person so inclined import my revised SGML into GitHub. In the spirit of
copyleft and open source, you're welcome!

I see that didn't happen: Your archive remains stuck at the obsolete
2013 revision.

Anyway, I've released v1.8.8 today, and anyone may have a copy under CC
SA 4.0, from http://linuxmafia.com/lug/User-Group-HOWTO.sgml .
Single-page and multipage generated HTML are in the same directory.

Share and enjoy!

As a point of information, TLDP's process documentation for HOWTO
authors continues to say authors should use TLDP's older methods of
submission. E.g., the TLDP front page directs authors to
https://wiki.tldp.org/AuthorsPage , which says "Once the document is
written, send the news to the discuss list, send the document to submit
list, or a link to the wiki page and the LDP will do the rest..." The
LDP Author Guide says to make the HOWTO available for a Review
Coordinator. So far, nothing on the Web site specifies GitHub.

Hi Rick,
Thanks, I have just submitted new version to our repository, it should be available on
the LDP website soon:

https://github.com/tLDP/LDP/commit/fd6dce27e0b423b0596a29425a7f33e78f09ef22

In relation to automatic reply from one of (ex) mailing list members, that mail is
out of control of the (properly patched) mailing list software. It was a direct mail
between them and you, all I can do is manually remove that address from subscribers
list what I have just done. Thanks for letting us know.

cheers,
Serge

That's all one could hope for. Thanks again.

I confirm that the change got checked into GitHub, but, FYI,
four days after you did that check-in, the HTML has not yet
been regenerated at
https://tldp.org/HOWTO/User-Group-HOWTO.html and
https://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/User-Group-HOWTO/
...to reflect new version v.1.8.8. Those pages remain at v.1.8.4.

I don't know if that is performed as a cronjob? In any event,
the SGML has not yet been processed to produce public-facing HTML.

I don't know if anybody still manage the tldp web site

the wiki is no more in line, many links on the main tldp.org page are
broken :-( and it's date (automatic) is 2020-08-19 :-(

I, of course, do not anymore have any access to the server (for some
years now)

Hi, Jean-Daniel.

I was making the assumption that Serge has some scripts that
check out the GitHub head SGML code and regenerate downstream pages
on www.tldp.org (such as HTML-format HOWTOs) from it.

If that code is currently broken, Serge should consider manually
updating https://tldp.org/HOWTO/User-Group-HOWTO.html (and related
sub-pages) and
https://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/User-Group-HOWTO/ from my upstream
site at http://linuxmafia.com/lug/

For the record, I generate those from my LinuxDoc SGML, thus:

linuxdoc -B html --toc=1 User-Group-HOWTO.sgml
linuxdoc -B html --split=0 User-Group-HOWTO-singlepage.sgml

(where the two SGML files are the same master SGML, just referred to by
symlink for the latter command).

I mean, it's great that Serge checked my v.1.8.8 SGML update into
GitHub, and I much appreciate that, but the main intended result of that
would be to push that change out via HTML generation to the TLDP Web
pages, right? Otherwise, the place where members of the public actually
_look_ for HOWTO updates doesn't get the changes.

Yeah, It definitely should not take 4 days :) :)
It seems there are some changes in ibiblio, I need to check the update script.

I'll let you know when it works correctly.

Hi, Serge! FYI:

https://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/User-Group-HOWTO/ now shows v.1.8.8. Fixed!
https://tldp.org/HOWTO/User-Group-HOWTO.html still shows v.1.8.4.

Except, problem: The highlighted URL now hosts the _multipage_ HTML version,
not the single-page HTML version it's supposed to host.

A further small point: Also, the master index at
https://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html hasn't been incremented
past the HOWTO's 2004 v.1.8.4 release. In fact, I don't spot any HOWTO
updates merged to that index page after September 2013.

(So, there may well be other updates checked into the GitHub repo that
haven't yet been successfully pushed out to the Web pages.)
