I'm the author of the Advanced Bash Scripting Guide (abs-guide.sgml).

What I use to generate html is a set of old scripts, namely kdb2html
and associated apps. To generate a pdf file from the html, there is
htmldoc.

As for a PO file . . . I don't even know what a PO file is.

again: it is impossible to translate documents partially,
our average document is rather impartial.

i was sure we already discussed it?

very well, so why fabricio is still trying to extract PO files
from our repository?

I'm not trying to extract PO files from your repository, I've extracted the
SGML and I trying to convert to PO file.
I collecting tldp documents, converting to PO file and uploading to pt-BR
repository.
I've converted XML files to PO well.
Why I doing this? I think that PO file is easiest to translate, maintain,
review and allow that translator use any PO translation program.
If has a better format or any reason that it's a bad idea, please let me
know.

But again and again: for software, not books/manuals.

Yes, open VI editor and just translate it.

po files are described here:

http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/manual/gettext/PO-Files.html

they are used to translate text strings in programms (comments, messages).

Usually you have (after gettext use) two lines in the file: the
original (mostly english) one and, below, the translated one.

The gettext compatible programs are able to display the right langage
gven the po file in some folder, no modification in the initial
program file is necessary.

This have nothing to do with documents, and certainly not with
translation (I was translating openSUSE for two years now, among other
things).

Right now, the best translating support is the wiki.

Copy the original HOWTO (if licence allows) to your localised page,
enclose the original texte in {{{ }}} (display raw) et move the
initial {{{ during the translation.
