As usual, jdd's English needs improving. Where's Martin Wheeler?

For writing HOWTO's by people who don't know docbook, I suggest
LinuxDoc. But what about using Moin-Wiki markup for writing HOWTOs?
It's likly just as easy as a subset of Linuxdoc. So could we ask for
someone to look into converting Moin-Wiki to Linuxdoc and conversely.
If it's too hard then don't do it but perhaps the software for
conversions to-from DocBook to Moin-Wiki could be easily modified to
support LinuxDoc.

Tha goal of the ldp is to give doc in a format able to translate to
the maximum number of other formats.

If I understand well, we *don't* provide these other formats on line
(should we?), so the source must be in the format the more and the
easier backend exists, probably docbook.

But what about using Moin-Wiki markup for writing HOWTOs?

well... this is what we try to do :-), at least on the wiki. I don't
see real reason to use MoinMoin markup outside of the wiki, anybody
can use the ldp wiki.

One of the reason I think it important to be able to allow protected
page is to allow author to begin drafts. I know I personnaly dislike
showing drafts! and setting a MoinMoin wiki is not that easy, so we
can't ask authors to setup one on they own machine.

as long as it's easy to convert *automatically* from wiki to docbook,
converting *to* wiki is a one way work

I know of no conversion prosess really able to work without using the
least common denominator of the two languages, too bad :-)

LinuxDoc and DocBook translate into these other formats.

Of course we provide html online.

Not always. Suppose you are not connected at home to the Internet.
Or suppose you have a dialup connection to the Internet and don't want
to tie up your phone line for a long time. Another problem is that it
may be a bother and take time to get on the Internet, your ISP might
be down, etc. Also, there are sometimes time limits for being
connected to the Internet or even time charges (some phone calls cost
per minute). So there are some people that would rather work
off-line, especially those in poor countries.

Of course. But couldn't one find the subset of docbook and linuxdoc
that corresponds to wiki and then just use those subsets so that one
could write in docbook or linuxdoc and automatically covert to wiki
(if the converters existed). But there may be some parts of the wiki
markup that can't be expressed in docbook/linuxdoc.

yes, I know. I have no problem with people using linuxdoc (I did, it's
very easy) or simply text, easy to paste in the wiki and met the
others do the markup :-)

the main problem of linuxdoc is images. But this is not linuxdoc only
(ASCII as well :-()

anyway we *have* to make some sort of lexicon giving the most probable
translation from docbook, linuxdoc, MoinMoin in a table and try to
improve this.

I plan to ask on the Moin list for such help

I will do the following points from the task list:
 - Automated docbook gateway.
 - contact the authors, ask them if they still maintain it and if they
accept to put the doc on the wiki.

In order to achieve the tasks, I created that page
http://wiki.tldp.org/Page_Status.
So, the current status of all the pages available in TLDP will be
published there.

jdd's English est meilleur que ma connaissance de la belle langue.
I've been lightly touching up his pages as I encounter them. ;->
