Contacting the author is really the only option in this case as the license
doesn't allow for distributing modified works without author approval.
If you are able to contact the author it might be a good idea to see if he
is still interested in actively maintaining the document. If not perhaps he
will release a version under a more permissive licence so others can keep
it up to date.
