Karl, thanks for the cogent summary; your mercy saved us all from a
rehash of old arguments.
Thinking about things, perhaps wikis have a place in the LDP
process. An author might place a rough draft into a wiki, and invite
comments and edits (with or without controls as to who can edit; the
latter, I suspect). This makes the review process and new
contributions simpler.
Once the document approaches maturity, the editor declares a content
freeze (just as software managers declare a feature freeze prior to a
release). Then editing is strictly for grammar, spelling,
organization, etc. When a reasonable number of folks agree the
document is ready, the editor freezes it, and translates the whole
kazoo into a Docbook document. Et viola! a release. Or, if you will,
an edition.
Key to it would be automating the translation from Wiki to Docbook.
The wiki could then be thawed in preparation for a new version of the
document or to catch spelling errors or other lacunae.
I concur with the LDP's effort to be authoritative. I think this
proposal will give the LDP a tool noted for its ease of editing and
let it retain its authority.
