Hi:

Does TLDP welcome non-English "source" documents (guides, how-to's), ie that
are not translations from an English one ?

The French section (traduc.org) seems mainly a translation project.

Thank you,

I think you can also contribute native French documents to traduc.org.
Please contact the people over at traduc for more info.
TLDP only distributes docs in English, sorry.

Kind regards,

Tille.

Isn't there a little bit more to it? There is es.tldp.org, it.tdlp.org
and more. These suggest a strong link to the LDP.

There is a link called "Translated HOWTOs" at
	http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/translations/
Looking through that directory, however (there is always an however),
much of it is old, all the way back to 1999. What happened to these
translation efforts. I cannot find the oldest (Swedish) one on the net.

Recent ones are not that fresh either:
   polish/ 08-Nov-2004 03:02
   it/ 17-Jan-2005 06:05
   italian/ 17-Jan-2005 06:05
   fr/ 28-Nov-2005 02:02

It was my impressin that the LDP also aimed for collecting
non-english translations and also help coordinating with
these groups.

A clarification might be useful here.

Hi :

I also discovered a fr.tldp.org site, which seems more like a French-speaking
group within the LDP. Did I understand well its status ? Is it active ? What
is the role of traduc.org in this context ?

As a Canadian (sorry!), I would really prefer to collaborate with a
French-speaking "mainstream" group rather than a French-speaking
"translation" group, with all my respect for the very good work of the
traduc.org group.

Thank's in advance,

MS

fr.tldp.org has been long dead. That is why we started working together
with traduc.org. The little french flag in the upper right corner of the
tldp.org home page also refers to traduc.
If we look at the Spanish LDP for instance, they have documents that are
originally written in Spanish, and until those are translated into
English, they won't be in the HOWTO or Guides collections at tldp.org
itself. So I imagine that the same goes for French. I've been directing
people with non-English documents to appropriate groups for years, because
we wouldn't know how to check accuracy of non-English documents.
Following that practice, a new German project is in the make, because the
existing one is dead.
I don't mean to shoo anybody away from the main LDP project by doing this,
but we have to deal with some limitations, I guess.

Tille.

Not really. New documents in native languages need to go to one of
the affiliated (translation) sites.

For some of those sites, we *pull* (mirror) their content via a
nightly job. That is what you see on:

I'm personally working on reviving the Swedish translation project,
which you can find here:
ftp://ftp.se.linux.org/pub/Linux/swe-doc/official

As for what happened, I can only theorise, but individual factors like
changing priorities or obligations play a part, as do motivators, such
as the population's perceived understanding of English and the
perceived need for formal documentation as software becomes easier to
use. Also, sociological factors such as the leadership, momentum,
workflow, and organisational culture of the translation effort are
important to the vitality thereof.
