In summary:

Roel has asked for assistance in updating and maintaining the
LDAP Implementation HOWTO; Gavin Henry ####@####.#### has
offered to help; and Tille has LDAP operations HOWTO currently hosted at
tille.soti.org/training/ldap. The original thread was started by Richard
Pixley, so I'm assuming that Rich would also be interested in helping?

Luiz also added:
"The LDAP-HOWTO was updated in march/2004 and the scope
of the document is to setup, configure and use the
LDAP server. The LDAP-Implementation-HOWTO, like Roel
said, is meant to show how the LDAP protocol can be
	used by other applications."

It sounds like there is the start of a new team to help bring our LDAP
Implementation HOWTO back up to date--including a definite scope of what
it should/not include. Please let me know if there's anything else I
can do to help with the LDAP resources.

Maybe we can put everything together in a guide? I rather good at
organizing larger documents (eventhough I say so myself ;-), I'd be
willing to coordinate the effort and take a small part in it, adding the
OpenLDAP related stuff that is in my operations HOWTO. If you want, I can
start on an outline and we can work from there?

I think it should still be two separate HOWTOs. The LDAP-HOWTO is already
being actively maintained. It is the LDAP Implementation HOWTO that needs
work. Either way, I think it would be wonderful if you were willing to
help out with this Tille!!

Hi Emma,

I am unsubscrubing my home domain and I am now using my business address i.e.
this one. I will do anything I can to help. What format are these written in,
as I have only write in DocBook XML at the moment?

Meaning that mine should be included in the LDAP HOWTO? I'd like to see
that, because we have a bit of overlap there. Luiz, how about adding a
bit (more) about access control and monitoring?

OK. So which exactly are the outdated parts? A couple of ideas already:

- - for authentication: wasn't there this diradmin package that makes it
easier?
- - recently I heard about a plugin for DHCP, only I got it working on
Solaris instead of Linux.
- - address books in Mozilla?
- - I gatter samba supports LDAP by now?
- - And Bind?

What other sections need to be updated? We'll need to make a list, I
guess, and then devide the tasks. But maybe it's better that the authors
do that, so they can keep an overview of what is happening with their
document?

BTW Gavin asked what format the doc is, it is in CVS in SGML. Maybe we
can take this chance and convert it to DocBook XML.

Tille.

You'll need to check with the authors on which parts are out-dated. Rich
(the original poster on this thread) may also have some ideas since he's
the one that wanted to write an updated version in the first place.

I don't know much about LDAP, so I won't be able to help much more on the
topic. Debian-user has a thread right now on good LDAP documentation. You
may want to check through the resources people are suggesting there. See:
	http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/05/msg00583.html
and messages that follow by thread. There are at least half four or so
messages in the thread.

I'm not sure that Roel wants to maintain his document anymore. Roel are
you looking for a new maintainer that you can forward the
emails/suggestions you've received up to now? Or do you have the time right
now to help out?

I can't say i have maintained the document in the past few years, so if
anyone else is willing to do that, please go ahead! I do have a little
time to spare, so maybe i can help by proofreading. I also have a bunch of
comments en requests for the Howto. They may be useful to get the new
maintainer going..

roel

So that leaves Gavin, Richard and me. Guys, if possible, I'd like you to
take some initiative for actually owning the document. First of all I
don't know enough about LDAP (yet), and secondly I already own two guides,
people are going to get bored of me ;-) Mind you I still want to help,
co-author some parts maybe, But it might be about time to start discussing
this off-list, then?

Tille.

Hi Machtelt,

Add me to this list please. I've just quickly read the two LDAP HOWTOs
and I don't think they illustrate current best practice. Compare the HOWTOs
with

   http://www.duke.edu/~gettes/giia/ldap-recipe/

which is the guide used by system administrators doing university LDAP
rollouts.

You can find discussion of wider directory issues at

   http://middleware.internet2.edu/

Thanks,
Glen
