I assumed you had only tried the poet address in the manual. Did you try his
corporate address too?

No, I did not use the poet address because I said it does not work (bounces).
I used his corporate address. I got no reply from the corporate address.

I thought of that as well, esp. taking into account David Lawyer's
last msg indicating the actual content update (from the Net3-HOWTO
to the Net-HOWTO) was minimal.

> This is obviously not a properly reviewed upgrade.

It was prior to us having any sort of review process.

Which is probably another good reason to replace it with
the prev. version (although I haven't looked at the license in
the early revision). Replacing it would also get rid of the many
"donation" links strewn throughout the document, which I agree
are quite irritating.

Unless we hear a compelling arguement against doing this within
the next couple days, I'll put the old HOWTO back in place
(I might convert to docbook xml first), and we'll add it to the
unmaintained list. Hopefully someone will pick it up ASAP.

I studied the complete document yesteday and I feel that I could be of
help in reviewing it.

I see that it is a very big document and focuses on Kernel 2.2 only, the
revision should focus on Kernel 2.4 and 2.6.
Apart from this few pages where supported hardware list is presented in
the documents,a link to Linux Hardware Compatiblity list
Would be better.

- Commands illustrated is to be corrected.
- At few places where man page details are explained could be replaced
with fewer necessary information(after discussion) and then direct the
reader to the manual.

If I be allowed, I would like to take up the document and work on it. I
feel that it would take me approximately 1 OR 2 months.

Thanks!

Sounds good, but see the next paragraphs. For a simple alternative to
DocBook markup see my mini howto: Howtos-with-LinuxDoc. The LinuxDoc
format is much easier to learn and use but is technically inferior to
DocBook. The url is
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/Howtos-with-LinuxDoc.html

The Network-Overview-HOWTO is also obsolete. If you work on the
Net-HOWTO it will be a major revision and involve a lot of work.
There's also a Network-Administrator's Guide. The major distributions
likely handle network configuration differently.

I just counted and there are 99 LDP-HOWTOs under "Networking". A few of
these may be in the wrong catgory but there's still a lot of them. See
the HOWTO index. I think the Net-HOWTO should have something to say
about each of them (at least list them), including mentioning ones that
are obsolete if feasible. Or you could try to contact authors and try
to get them updated. Just brief reviewing all these HOWTOs and trying
to get some authors to update would be a big help. For this I would
suggest a sampling type of review where you just take samples of parts
of them. So if you would rather review than update, that's another way
to help.

I have reverted the Net-HOWTO document back to previous the "NET3-4-HOWTO"
instance (Aug 1999), until a new maintainer is found and a new revision of the
Net-HOWTO can be published.

The source file corruption is no longer a problem, nor are the donation links present.

The NET3-4-HOWTO is in Linuxdoc SGML, the Net-HOWTO was in DocBook SGML.
I have kept both copies available in our CVS tree for whomever ends up maintaining
the document.

The current document looks good.
The contents of previous NET-HOWTO was little different from the current
one(NET3-4-HOWTO).

Kindly let me know if be allowed to maintain the NET3-4-HOWTO.
As discussed, I shall check with other Networking related HOWTOs and
discuss and decide upon
Pre-requisite reading (Networking-Overview etc) and provide link to
Other howtos at appropriate places.

I was about to ask if anyone on my LUG mailing list wanted to do it.
I would like to see someone do it that has some background in the
subject, like having read a textbook on it (such as Tanenbaum's: Computer
Networks). What's your background on this?

I have a bachelors degree in Computer Science and Engineering;
studied,enjoyed
Andy Tanenbaum's Computer Networks couple of times.
The current HOWTO, which presents more of theory is close to the book
and will hopefully enjoy working with it.
This is first time,I would be working(maintaining) a TLDP HOWTO,just
went through your DocBook Howto and found useful.
I have guest edited few entries at FOLDOC.
