Hello,

as a software engineer in a science lab I get more and more requests
about the use of the Gnu Auto tools (autoconf, automake, libtoolize...).

I am aware that both on-line manuals and books already are devoted to
the subject, but I didn't find any short (let's say under 15-20 pages)
practical intro. So I'm wondering if it would be worthwile to try to put
together a mini-HOWTO targeting novice developers and taking a practical
approach of building a software project using the Gnu Auto tools ?

Feel free to let me know if such a document already exists, or if it
would be interesting enough to be part of the LDP.

Mark

hi

ya.it would be a good effort if you manage to contain
the complexity of these tools in a few pages. that
would make it appealing to newbies

the gnu toolchain is an important piece of software.
many developers reinvent the wheel without realising
that such stuff already exists.

if you can write docs that would encourage more people
to adopt it would definitely be an important things to
do

Please write it! I find all the books and available documentation out
there is absolutely horrible, and the only way I've been able to
semi-learn the autotools and write my own Makefile.am's and
configure.ac's has been by looking at and copying others.

As far as I know, no such exists. Please do write it. The doc I've
seen seems to be written for people who already know what they are
doing, a classic computer documentation failing.
