I use Gentoo Linux, and from your script I read that I exactly the same
tools and stylesheets to get the PDFs. Which are therefore indeed as
suboptimal as yours.

Don't think so. Whereas the answers here on the list by Greg and Saqib
are very helpful, they support for me the idea that indeed PDF creation
from DocBook XML files in the LDP is not complete yet. Hence my idea to
start tweaking the fo/tldp-print.xsl stylesheet myself. Looks like an
interesting project to me.
