I realize this does not fix your problem, but the publishing
method I/we use for PDF generation for TLDP...
1. takes the single-file HTML variant created from the XML source
(jade -t sgml -i html -V nochunks ... <howto>.xml > <howto>.html),
2. does some filtering on it
(ldp-print package: http://tldp.org/authors/#pdf),
3. which then sends the file to htmldoc
(HTMLDOC package: http://www.htmldoc.org/)
