The outline looks quite reasonable, but it seems to assume an

I would strongly encourage the approach of first migrating to Free 
application software available for both Linux and Windows before also 
changing the underlying operating system. This reduces the culture 
shock and allows you to get used to one thing at a time without being 
overwhelmed with change.

When finally changing the operating system, then, this approach also has 
the advantage of decreased time from installing to productivity, 
something that's quite important to the busier ones among us.

The standard lot of software I suppose would include Mozilla Firefox and 
Thunderbird, Open Office, Gimp, Inkscape, Gaim, Vim, VLC, and others.
