It is not outdated, please look at man ld.so.

There is /etc/ld.so.conf, however; but even in such case overriding
defaults must be possible.

I didn't, as Slashdotters call it, RTFA, but using LD_LIBRARY_PATH on a
regular basis is definitely less preferable than an entry in
/etc/ld.so.conf. This does not, however, eliminate the need for
overriding the defaults when one wants to run the binary with a
different library set than that found in system distribution.
