Thanks for the response!

So, it appears to be feasible to create a new HOWTO by this means (with the 
caveats you mention).

I'm rather busy doing some other things for a while (which is a good thing ;-)  
I took another brief look at Tille's list of orphaned documents, if someone 
sees one that is of interest, we could try putting it on a wiki (either jdd's 
or WikiLearn) and see whether a rewrite goes anywhere.
