For a project centred around documentation (and therefore language), it
always did seem a bit curious to me that the abbreviated name of the
project should deviate from the conventions of the English language.
Examples of standard abbreviation by initials include "the BBC", "the
US", and "the UN" as opposed to "TBBC", "TUS", and "TUN". This allows
convenient and flexible constructs such as "the UN issued a statement"
and "UN officials issued a statement". Note that in the second case,
the abbreviation is used as an adjective. "The UN officials" would
imply that we were referring to some specific officials of the United
Nations.
Absorbing the article prevents such flexible usage. One has to say "we
are volunteers for TLDP", since "we are TLDP volunteers" expands to "we
are The Linux Documentation Project volunteers", which implies that the
speakers make up the complete set of volunteers.
This, along with the fact that articles are generally not capitalised in
titles (other than if it is the first word), probably explains why
abbreviations generally conform to this pattern.
I have found only two somewhat notable exceptions to the rule that
articles are not absorbed by initialisms: The Learning Channel (TLC)
and The Sporting News (TSN).
(On a related note, I suppose that makes part of my signature a
tautology. So be it.)
