DPI is only a derived measurement expressing the pixel size divided by
the print size. It has no direct relevance to raster images displayed
on the screen.
An image 100 pixels wide printed at 100 DPI will be one inch (2.54 cm)
wide. An image 100 pixels wide printed at 72 DPI will be
100/72=1.39" (3.53 cm) wide. Regardless, 100 pixels will always require
the same amount of memory.
In other words, if you are setting the image size in terms of pixels
(dots), then the number of dots (pixels) per inch only matters if you
intend for the image to have a specific physical size.
