Ouch!
I was happy that TLDP had at least 1 dedicated CD vendor.
I'm taking over the maintenance of a local TLDP CD that is presently stuck at
"Version 2003/05". Yes you read right, that is a date, and yes I also want to
cry. On the plus side it is given away for free.
The only other "locally" available version is on the LinuxFormat.co.uk
magazine DVD that retails for 145 Rand. That is just over 1/10th my monthly
salary or the average price of a pair of denim jeans. Strangely, given a
choice, people choose to cloth or feed themselves rather than buy a foreign
magazine.
Guess which version get distributed the most? :-(
Please, could we work out some way to make http://tldp.org/ more CD friendly.
At present it suffers from a severe case of link rot, that cripples
navigation on a CD. It also suffers from bloat. I found archived spam
in /archives/ldp-discuss/ that includes graphics, midi music and wallpaper
from the MS Outlook Express stationery collection (copyright Microsoft).
If it wasn't for this and similar problems, I would have gotten our local TLDP
CD updated 8 months ago. I want to get to the point where I can burn the CD's
over the weekend and have fresh supplies every week.
Could I also suggest that we ask ELS for the cover art and ISO of their CD. If
it could be hosted on ibiblio.org's FTP site, I could download it.
It would give a massive boost to the local Linux documentation. Even the local
library is struggling. There are no Linux books in the public lending
library, you have to go to the Reference section and read them there. Even
though the books are 4 years old, they are too valuable to lend out to the
general public.
Your efforts are appreciated.
