My personal methodology is to explain anything I feel needs to be
explained. Then I move to an Appendix whatever may not be applicable or
interesting to *most* people during their reading of the document.

The idea is that the majority of people won't be slowed down or bored by
material that is irrelevant to them, but those who do need that material
for whatever reason will find it easily.
