Hello All,
I have written a mini-HOWTO on issues relating to LILO, multiple
distributions and, incidentally, the 1024-cylinder problem.
While there are a significant number of other HOWTOs on the topic of
LILO and/or the use of different operating systems, there are some
deficiencies. The specific cause of my writing this document was an
inability to locate information which I needed on TLDP.
The current LILO related HOWTOS are focussed on issues such as getting
Windows98/2000/NT working with LILO, or one of the BSDs. They are of
very little assistance when using two versions of Linux.
The Multiple Distro HOWTOs follow a similar pattern - focusing on
using Windows of various flavours, BSDs etc., but never two Linuxen,
with one exception - the Multi-Distro-Dev HOWTO, which discusses using
different distributions in a nested pattern, quite unsuitable for my
specific itch.
More importantly, much of the current writing is focussed on using
grub, rather than LILO. Due to using older hardware, I was unable to
use grub, and so I didn't get much benefit from that literature
(although it is of a very high technical standard)
I also ran into difficulties due to the dreaded 1024-cylinder issue.
This is reflected in the text but is not the core of it.
I have placed the Docbook-XML at
http://homepage.eircom.net/~dangold/LILO-Multi-Distro-mini-HOWTO.xml .
HTML version can of course be obtained by feeding the above link to
the monster at http://www.xml-dev.com/blog/test.php .
I would appreciate comments and feedback of the usual nature, but
please, be generous - this is a first for me, in technical writing,
Docbook and XML.
Thank you for your time.
