I applaud this very diplomatic solution, and I don't envy you the work
it will entail.  fwiw, TeX/LaTeX are (or were) very heavily used in
the scientific community, and I suspect that's where most of its
support still resides.  They are formidable and capable documentation
systems.  Think of them as source code for documentation.  LyX is just
something that "promises" to wrap them in a GUI, for better or worse.

I used it for years and only time and convenience have managed to drag
me away from them.
