Hmm... I'm still hoping the original author takes it back, but I know 
that's unlikely.

You talk about the license of the article, and it's not FDL or something 
similar.  It says, among other things, "Any translation or derived work 
must be approved by the author in writing before distribution."
I did not have this permission from him, so I think I have violated the 
license by just fixing the document!

Is this true? Can we not update the document until we hear from the author?
