I don't want to buy into the finer point of the discussion.

But as an author I need the following:

  - numbered sections and figures (I need this for bug reports and
    cross-references).

  - text in boxes to be smaller than main text (the boxes are asides,
    even if they are a warning, and should not dominate the textual
    flow).

  - program listings to be mono spaced and small

  - screens to differentiate
     - prompts
     - user entered text
     - program output

  - literals and variables to be distinguishable
