OK, Everybody has ventilated their frustrations, let's make peace now.
I've reviewed the Author guide and while I still don't see what's so
difficult about learning DocBook - I did it in a couple of hours, and
that's not much for a skill gained that certainly payed off - we might be
able to add a 1-page document like David's LinuxDoc 65-lines intro which
he mentioned in the section "for the faint of heart".
We can then point to it from other pages on the TLDP site and from within
the Author guide. If David posts his doc, I'd be happy to try and make
something similar in DocBook.
And for those who don't want to learn DocBook or even LinuxDoc (because
they are still stuck to TeX, and this is not meant to point to any of the
readers here, but to some acquaintances of mine), we might try an extra
effort for making new authors really believe that they don't actually have
to learn it if they don't want to. Although I would encourage submissions
in open formats, such as plain text and PDF, for example. It is not at
all clear from http://tldp.org/authors/ that you have a choice besides
DocBook and LinuxDoc. If a new author is not willing to put in much time,
(s)he is not going to go any further than this page, and we might lose
that input.
I'd suggest that for instance in the "Getting Started" or "Tasks heading
at http://tldp.org/authors/
a paragraph along the following lines is added:
"If you are reading this and you think that you can't help us, you're
wrong. Everybody who can read, can contribute. You don't need any
special skills."
And maybe in the "Tasks" section:
- "Write a new HOWTO, FAQ or Guide. Here is a list of documents that are
"in progress". While we encourage authors (link to short doc and author
guide) to learn about our prefered format, DocBook (add another link to
relevant pages), mastering DocBook is not at all a requirement."
Or something like that.
Tille.
