Actually, I was thinking of a pre-made boot disk like Tom's rtbt (http://www.toms.net/rb/) or bootable CD-ROMs like Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.com) rather than building something from source code.  The bootable diskette or CD-ROM could be used to rescue the system in case you need to back out.
