Dear Eric,
While writing TLDP Weekly News, I had to put in something about your
latest new document. I have a couple of remarks and questions:
I was surprised to see that you point to the repository of Dag Wieers. I
know him irl, and while he's a good chap, he does not give a d*mn about
his packages being useful or even working (see for instance freshrpms
mailinglist archives for remarks of other people about this).
The packages might be OK now, but chances are very likely that they will
be outdated in a couple of weeks/months and that Dag will not care to
maintain them. This will be very confusing then for our readers. I
consider Dag's packages not for the sort of newbie users/readers we are
having at TLDP (with all respect, but people come to TLDP because they
want to become specialists, not because they are already, we must keep
that in mind).
Also, how come that I cannot find the initial submission on the submit
mailinglist? Or that it was never discussed on the discuss mailinglist?
I know you are an experienced writer, but don't your documents need to be
reviewed, if only for reasons of objectivity, by another person than you?
I had the same remark for the Linksys Bue Box Router HOWTO, but nobody
ever reacted. We have these procedures now for controling the quality of
our docs, yet somehow they don't seem to apply for yours. What is the
value of a submission then, I ask myself?
While we're at it, can you use TLDP CVS, please? If I have to write
something about the next version, I'd like to be able to see the
differences with the previous one. It might also be easier for the person
reviewing your documents.
Just my thoughts,
Tille.
