Agreed, but the pdf for ex would then get the number and anyone could simply
print it from a laser printer for some private use - and academic use.

K&R is an excellent reference for C, but we have also outstanding documents on
various topics. I've been teaching unix bases with our Bash HOWTO as the support
material. I think others do the same. Yet students can't go to the univ library
to find the document or other "books" from the same editor or project. I can say
"tldp.org" as much as I want, some students can't afford a computer let alone a
printer. The problem will be even worse in less wealthy countries.

In the academic world I 100% sure it would help. Maybe we should ask librarians
what they think about it?

Best regards,
