Primarily to Emma Jane, maybe for inclusion in the author guide, but
might also be useful for all you "faint of heart" (those are her words,
not mine ;-) who are looking for a click-click tool.

Hello Emma,

One of my friends is coming to to see mee tonight to get an intro to XML
and DocBook. He hasn't seen the light yet and is using MS Windows, and
asked if there are any tools available that might be easy to use. So I
looked around a bit and found Oxygen, a Java-based program ->
multiplatform (I tried it on Linux of course). It is not free but you can
get a 30-days trial license (fast!).
This person is looking for a tool for professional use, so cost is not
really a problem. It's not Open Source afaik, don't hit me.

Here is where you get the binaries, docs and license:

Eventhough I am horrified by all this graphics business (I have trouble
even finding things in my homedir with such interfaces, so you can imagine
it is not my cup of tea), there are a couple of advantages:

- - It recognizes parent/children relationship between tags and gives you a
list of all possible children for a given parent, this is the nicest part
I think. You still need to know a bit about DocBook XML, but not that
much;
- - It does validation, and not only checks whether tags are complete, but
also checks attributes to tags;
- - It does indentation and formatting -> no long lines (which I always have
in vim);
- - I tried converting HOWTOs and the Weekly News editions: for
instance DocBook to xsl -> fo to pdf: all ok, but my ITL guide (multiple
part XML doc) produced an out of memory error;

I put a screenshot on http://tille.soti.org/images/oxygen1.png

This is just informational, I have nothing to do with the people who made
this editor.

Tille.
