I remember seeing some good info in some Samba documentation. Of course
I can't find the exact link right now. But
http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/problems.html had some of the same
info I remember.
The one I remember was saying that Samba gets blamed for things that are
really the fault of underlying network problems. So they described how
to use tcpdump, ethereal, etc. to check your network
