I think the main reason is speed.

linuxdoc can be learned in hours (often no more than one). Docbook sgml 
ml.. much more (I never manage to do it completely) and I will surely 
_never_ learn docbook xml. I'm a documentation writer, not a coder.

If ldp was to accept only xml, I think the number of author will drop 
significantly.

think that it's only for political  reason I gives my doc to LDP, I 
could as well have it in html on my own website (very well mirrored).

of course once OpenOffice or any other (lyx?) fine editor really 
functional, no more problem
