David's concern is a valid one, but I'm reluctant to forestall a
possibly valuable change for years without at least conducting an
experiment.

So, there is now a WHATIS Wiki[1]:
   http://geekhavoc.com/whatis/

The idea may go nowhere; I'm not committing to coordinating the
project, or even continuing the Wiki for more than a few months.
I'd just like to see if some valuable documentation can be
generated, and whether anyone incorporates that content into
HOWTOs.
