Does XPath 2.0 make this task easier?

I agree that
match="//chapter/section/section/section|//article/section/section/section"
is much clumsier than match="sect3".  Is it so much worse that
the more flexible solution should be set aside, however?

I'm very much in favor of well-structured solutions like this,
but I'm at a loss to imagine how it would add significant value.

As you say, though, there are plenty of more pressing problems.
