I rate this one -10; on whatever positive scale you choose.

Unfortunately -- yes.
As are most of the HOWTOs produced by the same author, unfortunately.
Which is a thundering good argument for a wiki-based system which will
allow a co-operative team of editors to edit this sort of offering
ON-THE-SPOT. (I really can't be bothered to go to a cvs system, pull
out the source, edit it offline, then poke it back again. Gimme a wiki,
and I'll do it there and then, as I read.)

No -- you are absolutely correct; perhaps even a little conservative in
your judgment :)
But -- as the co-author of a *very* badly maintained HOWTO (totally out
of date), I don't suppose I should be throwing stones.
Right -- on a positive and contributory note -- we obviously need an
author's Style Guide.
Perhaps we could use extracts culled from this HOWTO as examples of a
hyperbolic style to be avoided at all costs?
