See my other huge rambling post, but allow me to reinforce that message
here: it must be easier for new authors to produce documents. It has taken
me more work to start writing documentation than it originally did to set
up my first Linux server, ipchains (by hand), sendmail/pop/imap, and apache
all together.

I love the thought I had about creating an "ldp-author-tools.noarch.rpm"
package. This could easily be created for Red Hat, Mandrake, and Debian
since all of them use packages and have dependency-resolution tools, and it
would allow a person to be up and running with a single command and less
than 30 seconds of effort. Then, all a new author has to learn is SGML/XML!
All the tools get installed or upgraded automagically.

Cheers,
