Hi.
Section 4.6 of the LDP Author guide:

is titled "Inserting pictures".
I am not aware about the acceptability of
such a thing, but my guess is it should be OK if
the picture is not bytewise big. Linux folks usually
are like the monks at Shangri-la :-), "they accept
everything in moderation without any hard and fast
rules" is what I have experienced till date.
However there could be some very good reasons not
to have images in HOWTOs. I wait and watch the list.
