We encounter this problem constantly. It appears Red Hat is responsible
for this confusion. They prohibit you from using the name "Red Hat" if
you're not buying their distribution, AFAIK. For instance, you are
permitted to download their entire distribution, RPM by RPM, from their
site, and build your own GoodNessGracious Linux 1.0 out of it, but you
can't call it "Red Hat" Linux.

Therefore, a lot of organisations, e.g. magazines, who wish to
distribute Linux but don't want to buy it from Red Hat, and don't want
to use Debian for some reason, actually pick up the entire distro from
the Red Hat Website, remove the "Red Hat" prefix, and re-distribute it.
Red Hat permits this. Therefore, "Red Hat Linux 7.3" becomes "Linux 7.3"

We've seen this too many times to even remember. :)
