Images can be made to work with LyX and SGML, as in 

http://www.karakas-online.de/EN-Book/

which is written entirely in LyX, exported to SGML, processed by some
scripts and transformed in all the other formats (see them in
http://www.karakas-online.de/EN-Book/formats.html ).

I hope to be able to finish the document describing this procedure soon.
