Another important difference is that elements are case-sensitive in XML.
In DocBook SGML one can unfortunately write <ChaPtEr> but in DocBook XML
you must write <chapter>.

For the politically inclined it may be important that XML is completely
open format unlike SGML. AFAIK there are no practical problems with
SGML, though.

Personally I prefer XML because it's stricter, simpler and very well
supported by many programming languages. XSLT makes life often very
simple, too.
