This is not desirable for 2 reasons.  One is that being online consumes
bandwidth, especially the bandwidth of tying up the local phone line if
that's how one is connected.  For example, one may be expecting
important phone calls (say about a temporary job where one must respond
immediately) and doesn't want the phone line to be busy.  Call waiting
may be too costly and/or complex to install.  Phone charges may be by
the minute.  Even if one isn't charged, bandwidth still costs someone.
So for many, it's better to compose docs offline.

Also, most people have already learned an editor or word processor and
don't want to have to learn another one.  If the one that supports XML
is very simple to learn, it can't have many feature and is not as
convenient (and efficient to use) as what one already knows.
