After a few hrs research in the gratis, libre xml area the following
editors seem worth checking out:

looks good
eXchaNGer
http://xngr.org/
looks good, but editing is a newer feature to what has strictly a
browser.
http://www.logilab.org/xmltools/xmleditor.html
also looks good, but more primative than the Java ones, but is python
http://buzz.sourceforge.net/
lang: python
pretty crude still, has a lot of potential.
