If you know the message ID you can get the raw text.

No. You get the same stuff you would see with a GUI browser.
It's only that Google disallows access to the default user agent
of wget (and perhaps a lot of other robots).

Right now it reads a list of message IDs from a file.
Your problem could be solved by a separate pass
invoking Google's advanced newsgroup search.
But perhaps there is cleaner output format than
all that HTML.
