Please don't forget to mention RedHat's /sbin/mkinitrd.
This is a shell script that checks /boot, /lib/modules and
/etc/modules.conf. If you stick to their naming convention
for vmlinuz you can use it for your own custom kernels.
Another interesting script in this area is /sbin/mkbootdisk.

Together they make it trivial to build a working boot disk.
The code is nice to read, and the result can be customized.
