Here's some things I was able to find (word wrap isn't working well so I
apologize in advance if this message comes out bad!):

1. Article posted to comp.os.linux.announce on Feb 24, 1997 by Lars Wizernius
- announces newsgroup is five years old and talks about founding of it, as
well as his start with Matt Welsh, and work on his first LDP document:

http://sorry.vse.cz/~tom/Linux-Announce/141.html

2. LDP Manifesto, Last Revision 21 December 1993 -- Matt Welsh (email
####@####.####

http://web1.archive.org/web/19990210115002/metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/LDP/LDP-Manifesto

3. Announcement of Linux System Administrator guide v0.3 by Lars Wirzenius,
and mentions at the top that it will soon be in a new LDP subdirectory on
sunsite.unc.edu's shortly, written Aug 6, 1995:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=wirzenius+welsh+ldp+sunsite&hl=en&safe=off&selm=cola-liw-807729284-9656-1%40oravannahka.helsinki.fi&rnum=1

4. Matt Welsh posts to comp.os.linux on Dec 21, 1993 with LDP Status Update.
Docs are available at sunsite in directories, and this is the Manifesto.
Maybe it was between Dec 21, 1993 and Aug 6, 1995 (or soon thereafter as
indicated by Lars in the previous link) that the site went up:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=wirzenius+welsh+ldp+sunsite&start=10&hl=en&safe=off&selm=1993Dec21.230412.17238%40cs.cornell.edu&rnum=14

You might find it interesting to visit http://www.archive.org. This site has
archives of old WWW sites, but you don't often find much prior to 1996. When
I searched sunsite.unc.edu it would translate it to metalab.unc.edu even from
this search, but there is still access to the original file directories from
there!
