Based on your description, I assume you mean customizing the
stylesheet layer (and not the DTD!).

Are you using DSSSL? If so, I use this set of docs:

   http://docbook.sourceforge.net/projects/dsssl/doc/

If you're using XSL, try some of the references found at:

   http://xmlsoft.org/XSLT/
