I don't see this on this list at all (using mutt). It behaves very
predictably. But I do have the same problem on sourceforge lists. 'l'
with  mutt should reply to list only, but always cc's the author too. 

In any case, I think anyone doing a lot of list mail should have:

# Nuke all duplicate messages
:0 Wh: msgid.lock
| /usr/bin/formail -D 16384 msgid.cache

in .procmailrc, which takes care of incoming duplicates. FYI.
