Even better if it could produce a useful SGML/XML diff against the
original so that one could use the standard Unix diff & patch tools to
look at the proposed changes against the authoritative text in
context.
By "useful" I mean that it doesn't reformat every thing so that the
two documents appear to have nothing in common, making the diff
useless, or otherwise mung the source.
Alternatively, it could build an SGML/XML document and send that to a
maintainer on request, and the maintainer could then use Emacs' ediff
mode to examine the proposed changes.
I suspect that neither proposal will be easy to implement. For one
trivial thing, different folks may use different tab expansion
values. For another thing, not all the documents are in docbook.
Or we could pull a Microsoft and tell maintainers, "You have to
upgrade to docbook in order to use neat new feature." But I would be
loath to do that. In fact, I would be loath to tell maintainers they
had to do much of anything.
