Welcome! :-)

I recommend you learn XML, since it's more facilities and is evolving
fast. XML can be used in several ways and, even with some limitations
wrt SGML, it is 'more usable'. (that's not exactly like this
technically speaking, but you can think this way and it won't be all
wrong)

Besides, you can use a lot of XML while handling SGML documents (the
opposite is also true).
